They also use their trunks for social interactions, such as greeting each other or picking up and playing with their young.


African elephants have large, fan-like ears, which help regulate their body temperature by releasing heat. Their ears are also an important tool in communication, as elephants communicate through low-frequency sounds called infrasound that travel long distances. These elephants live in matriarchal societies, where the oldest female leads the herd. The matriarch is responsible for guiding the herd to food and water sources and protecting them from threats. Male elephants, once they mature, leave the herd and lead solitary lives or form loose bachelor groups.


Their diet consists of grasses, fruits, bark, and leaves, with African elephants consuming up to 150 kilograms (330 pounds) of food per day.
